My Girlfriend Is Pregnant – Planned Or Unexpected Pregnancy?

My girlfriend is pregnantThe words “pregnant girlfriend” can be greeted with an entire range of emotions, regardless of whether or not the pregnancy was planned. As life events go a pregnancy is about as important as it gets!

What I want to cover in this article is dealing with the fact that your girlfriend is pregnant and some tips on how to move forward from there.

If you’ve suddenly found yourself in a position where you’re thinking “I got my girlfriend pregnant?” then it’s after coming as something of a shock to you and you’re not even remotely prepared – now you have a lot of emotions to deal with. If, on the other hand, you find yourself referring to “my pregnant girlfriend” then the whole pregnancy thing might have come as a shock to you, but you’re probably feeling quite happy about the prospect of being a dad.

Obviously if you’re reading this page you’re not going to be looking for information on how to get your girlfriend pregnant, you’ve already done that. The reason why you’re here is that, one way or the other, you’re not quite sure what to do next, so I’m going to look at a few potential scenarios here in relation to pregnancy as a whole.

Unexpected Pregnancy

Despite the fact that contraception is widely available for both men and women there are some childish myths that still seem to be doing the rounds – you can’t get pregnant the first time you have sex or you can’t get pregnant if you have sex while standing up – which results in millions of unplanned pregnancies every single year. An unplanned pregnancy tends to fill most people with a sense of absolute panic but that doesn’t mean that it needs to be a negative experience. The simple fact that you’re going to be a father in the not too distant future means that you’ve carried on your family name and bloodline – if you want to break it down to the simplest and move obvious benefits for you as a guy.Funny illustration of a surprised man looking at girlfriend's pregnancy test

Planned Pregnancy

Nothing can prepare you for pregnancy – not in the real world, and that includes anyone who has planned for a pregnancy too. The fact that you’ve been looking for information on a “pregnant girlfriend” would suggest that you’re probably quite young, and possibly a bit too young to be planning a family. There’s an unfortunate trend in young couples where they view getting pregnant and having a child like it’s some scene from a Hollywood romance, when nothing could be further from the truth.

Even in planned pregnancies you need to be fully aware that a tiny human being is going to rely on you for all their needs for at least the first 10 years of their life, and you’re also going to be legally responsible for them for the first 18 years of their life. This isn’t something you can simply decide that you don’t like doing anymore – so hopefully you planned your pregnancy like an adult would, and not like some overly-excited teenager.Man standing behind his pregnant wife and holding her belly

The whole idea of being a father is something which scares the living hell out of most men but it shouldn’t really. What you’re experiencing right now is just the shock that, planned or unplanned, your girlfriend is pregnant and that she’s going to have your child. How you actually deal with that is going to be something which you need to discuss with your girlfriend, taking into consideration that she might not want to continue the pregnancy and would prefer to have it terminated instead.

If I can share no other advice with you here then it’s that when your girlfriend does tell you that she’s pregnant that the very last thing you should ever say is “So do you want to keep it?” – not even when it’s said as a joke.
